LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? The man who helped create the online reference Wikipedia said Tuesday that the end of Encyclopaedia Britannica's print run shows the world's growing reliance on the Internet as a base for knowledge.

Jimmy Wales' first visit to Nigeria also highlighted the growth of other languages besides English on Wikipedia, particularly the Yoruba language of the oil-rich nation's southwest. While growth remains slow and uneven, Wales said he hopes more users for the community-edited website will begin offering new articles as creation on the English version has slowed as it now has nearly 4 million entries.

"I'm an optimist about the Internet as a force for preserving culture, while at the same time increasing global culture. I don't think we have to have either/or," Wales told The Associated Press in an interview in Nigeria's commercial capital, Lagos.

Wikipedia's popularity remains high among Internet users as print resources continue to suffer. This month, the owners of Encyclopaedia Britannica, published since 1768, announced its print edition will stop being available when its current stock runs out.

The Chicago-based Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc., which publishes the 32-volume set, said it will continue to offer digital versions. Wales said that decision represented the will of a public now expecting to have knowledge at the push of a mobile phone button or at the finger-sweep of a tablet computer.

"It's the culmination of a very, very long trend. In a way, it's a sad moment, but it's the way technology moves on," Wales said. "Even if we think Britannica is what we want, we really want Britannica on an iPad or a phone, accessible to us all the time, not in dusty books on the shelf ? no matter how beautiful those might be."

Wales acknowledges the limits of Wikipedia, a website he said is edited by a user base that's 87 percent male, with an average age of 26. He said he hopes a simplified editing process will allow the reference site to attract a more diverse range of contributors with knowledge in a variety of fields.

In Africa, Wales said that the Yoruba language of Nigeria's southwest, including Lagos, led the continent in actual pages in its own version of Wikipedia with more than 29,000 pages. However, the majority of those articles came from "bots" ? programs designed to take data from a table and create a simple Wikipedia entry. Detailed entries remain far fewer, as there appears to be one dominant user creating the Yoruba entries, he said.

Connectivity to the Internet remains another challenge. Nigeria in particular relies on Internet over mobile phone networks as hard-wired lines remain few and expensive. Fiber optic lines now running under the ocean to Nigeria could see better service brought to the nation of more than 160 million people.

"From this hotel, the speed of the connection is better than New York City, which is quite amazing," Wales said during a speech Tuesday at a seminar on youth marketing, drawing applause from the crowd. "Of course there are bigger challenges. For one thing, this is at a fancy hotel by the seaside and of course loads of people across Nigeria are still struggling with very difficult access issues."

Susan G. Komen executives depart in turmoil over a funding flap of Planned Parenthood. At least five Susan G. Komen executives have left.

At least five high-ranking executives with the Susan G.?Komen?for the Cure breast cancer charity have resigned in the aftermath of the organization's decision to eliminate its funding for Planned Parenthood.

The departures include three officials from?Komen's?Dallas headquarters, as well as CEOs of affiliate groups in Oregon and New York City. The chairman of the foundation also stepped down from his post, though he will remain on the board. Although some cited personal reasons, the resignations suggest that?Komen?is still in turmoil, even after reversing course and restoring the money to Planned Parenthood.

Komen?spokeswoman Leslie Aun said she could not speak to individuals' reasons for leaving but acknowledged the effects of the controversy among supporters.

"Obviously, we know some folks are upset. We've certainly seen that," Aun said. "We know people have been upset by recent events, but most really do recognize the importance of our work."

The resignations began about a month ago. Chris McDonald, executive director and chief executive of the organization's Oregon and southwest Washington affiliate, announced that she'll leave at the end of April. She said her decision wasn't "predicated by any one event," but that actions by national headquarters affected her thinking.

"Despite our deep frustration about the distraction that our organization headquarters' actions caused, I was proud that our affiliate took a strong stand against the politicization of the fight to improve women's health," McDonald said in a Feb. 25 statement posted on the organization's website.

One board member for McDonald's affiliate, Portland attorney Jennifer Williamson, rejoined the board after stepping down last month to put pressure on the national organization. She couldn't walk away from the localKomen?work to expand access to women's health care, she said.

"As a local affiliate we could push back on them but we couldn't do anything about it," said Williamson, who is also on the Planned Parenthood board and is a Democratic candidate for the state Legislature. "I did what I had the ability to do, which was resign from the board. But to support the mission ... I rejoined the board."

News emerged in late January that?Komen?had decided to stop giving money to Planned Parenthood for breast-screening services because Planned Parenthood was the focus of a congressional investigation launched at the urging of anti-abortion activists. After a three-day firestorm of criticism,?Komen?decided to restore the money.

Some?Komen?affiliates, including McDonald's, were among those that publicly opposed the policy change that cut off grants for Planned Parenthood.

In the days after the reversal,?Komen?policy chief Karen Handel resigned. She had opposed abortion as a Republican candidate for Georgia governor and had become a target of those angry about the decision to halt funding to Planned Parenthood.

In Dallas, the three resignations were Katrina McGhee, executive vice president and chief marketing officer; Nancy Macgregor, vice president of global networks; and Joanna Newcomb, director of affiliate strategy and planning.

McGhee announced in February that she would be leaving May 4 "for personal reasons" and because it was "time to make a change."

McGregor will leave in June, and Newcomb departed at the end of February. The Associated Press left messages Thursday for McGhee and Macgregor. Newcomb declined to comment.

Dr. LaSalle D. Leffall Jr. also will step down from his post as chairman of the foundation's board of directors as of March 31, but he will remain on the board, Aun said. His decision, which was finalized at a Thursday board meeting, comes as he is "stepping back a bit" from the board due to his responsibilities is his role as provost at Howard University, she said. Leffall did not immediately return messages from the AP.

Dr. Dara Richardson-Heron, CEO of?Komen's?New York City affiliate, said Tuesday that she will leave April 27. Her affiliate was also critical of the Planned Parenthood decision, but she did not cite that in a letter posted on the website, saying only that she wanted to pursue "new career opportunities" and that leaving "was not an easy decision."

Vern Calhoun, a spokesman for the New York affiliate, said Richardson-Heron was not speaking to reporters.

Spiders in Borneo: A Vertical Life

A whole host of jumping spiders spend their days crawling up and down tree trunks. The ones that live many meters above the ground are hard to get, but the ones that get down to eye level are pretty easy to find.

Often you can find the tree-trunk dwellers just by looking, but because many are colored just like tree bark, it helps to tap the trunk with a stick to provoke them to move and show themselves. When none is seen, or if you are impatient, there?s another method: brushing the trunk with a brush, while a beating sheet is held underneath to catch those dislodged. Here?s Edy in action:

I think you can see that beating sheets are used for more than just beating (see my post on ?Beating around the bushes?). They also serve as umbrellas and picnic blankets.

Brushing a tree trunk yesterday, Edy found the most surprising spider of the trip, an adult female that?s tiny ? about 1.6 mm long. She has a narrow body and strangely placed eyes (the spider, that is). We didn?t even know what subfamily she belonged to, so we called her ?Gray Pixie?. Today, we found males. Males are easier to identify because their palpi, which they use to transfer sperm, often have traits characteristic for a large group of species, even if their bodies have evolved to take on diverse forms. The palpi indicate that these are probably a very strange species of Laufeia, which normally have much larger bodies:

Mali rebels advance in north, mutineers seek president

BAMAKO (Reuters) - Tuareg rebels in northern Mali pushed south to occupy positions abandoned by government forces, sources said, as mutinous soldiers in the distant capital Bamako sought to complete a coup by hunting down the president.

The MNLA rebels were approaching towns in the desert north, taking advantage of the confusion created by the attempted coup in Bamako by low-ranking soldiers, a military source told Reuters.

Mutinous soldiers, angered by what they saw as the government's poor handling of the northern rebellion, roamed the streets of the capital after over-running the presidential palace and taking control of state television.

The head of a body set up by the mutineers, speaking to journalists, suggested soldiers were trying to arrest President Amadou Toumani Toure. The president's whereabouts were unknown, though there were unconfirmed reports he was being protected by loyalist troops in the city.

Sporadic gunfire could be heard in the capital in the early hours of the morning on Friday, a Reuters reporter said.

Mali, which was flooded with men and weapons after Libya's civil war, was already facing the Tuareg-led rebellion, a growing Islamist threat and a food crisis when the coup broke out after soldiers mutinied Wednesday.

A Malian officer in the northern town of Kidal said rebels had occupied the military camp in Anefis, 100 km (60 miles) to the southwest, after government forces withdrew.

"The army has pulled back to Gao," a source in Timbuktu, another main town in the north, told Reuters, asking not to be named. "There is no longer any military leadership. (The rebels) will take the towns in the north," he said.

The MNLA said on it website that it had taken town on the Gao-Kidal highway after Malian troops abandoned their positions and withdrew to Gao.

The MNLA rebels, whose numbers have been swollen by Malian Tuareg returning from the ranks of Libya's army, have been fighting since mid-January for an independent north. They have pushed government soldiers out of remote towns but had not yet threatened the regional capitals of Kidal, Timbuktu and Gao.

Rebels pledged on Thursday to take advantage of the chaos as senior civilian and military officials in northern regions were arrested by mutinous soldiers.

PROTECTED

Diplomats and officials said they believed Toure was being protected by a pocket of loyalist soldiers.

Mutinous soldiers said they would launch an attack on the parachute regiment they believe is protecting the president, who has overseen a decade of relative stability.

Toure, 63, a former paratrooper who seized power in 1991, had gained the nickname "Soldier of Democracy" in his West African state and had been preparing to cede power in April after an election.

Mali's neighbours, the United Nations and world powers from Paris to Washington called for a return to constitutional rule. Regional body ECOWAS said it would not recognise the junta.

The World Bank and African Development Bank on Thursday condemned the military coup and suspended funds to Mali.

U.S. aid group Millennium Challenge Corporation, which had been working on developing the country's agriculture and irrigation system, suspended operations on Thursday, criticising the "unconstitutional actions" of the mutineers.

Captain Amadou Sanogo, president of the newly formed National Committee for the Return of Democracy and the Restoration of the State (CNRDR), a body set up by the mutinous soldiers, said the coup had been provoked by the government's poor handling of the crisis in the north.

Sanogo, who said he had received training from U.S. Marines and intelligence, told pan-African television station Africable on Thursday he would not remain in power but refused to give a timeframe for restoring civilian rule.

Soldiers had long complained they had not been given the right equipment to fight the northern rebels.

"Three months, six months, nine months, it will depend on the structure that we put in place for me to go back to being a soldier. Someone else will do the rest," Sanogo said.

"We have come asking for decent living conditions and to be treated well ... We will fight for this," he added.

Restoring state authority to the north was the priority, he said. But, amid reports of arrests of ministers and other senior government officials, Sanogo implied that those detained would face trial for alleged crimes.

"We are not killers. I am not a killer. But the moment was right and everyone will have to face charges before the appropriate authority," he said.

Reese Witherspoon is reported pregnant with her third child. The Oscar winner and her agent husband, Jim Toth, are expecting their first child together, according to reports.

Sources tell Us Weekly that "Reese is right around 12 weeks." Another source added that the couple have been "trying to get pregnant." Reese already has a son, 8-year-old Deacon, and daughter, 12-year-old Ava, with ex-husband Ryan Philippe.

While Witherspoon's rep has yet to comment, a new shot of the star sporting what appears to be a baby bump by her hotel pool in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, earlier this month is adding credence to the reports. Sources said the twosome don't plan to announce the news, however, "the timing is right. She's so happy!"

While appearing on "Daybreak" in the U.K. in February, the actress made reference to her love of babies, saying, "I hug all my girlfriends' babies. They're all so stinking cute."

She added that she was having a hard time with her kids getting older. "There's a little sadness as they're growing up and walking away from you, but it kind of changes the whole dynamic," she said. "We have really funny dinner conversations now, and they know more about certain topics than I ever, ever knew."

When she spoke to MTV News around the same time, she opened up about the possibility of her kids going into show biz. "I don't encourage [watching my movies]. If a movie comes on, we'll watch it and they kind of find it entertaining. They're kind of fascinated by a movie I did when I was 14. They really want to see 'Man in the Moon,' " she said. "It just doesn't enter the picture. I don't know. I encourage their artistic abilities. But they haven't said it's anything they want to do."

Toth and Witherspoon married in March 2011 at the actress' California ranch. The wedding was attended by celebrity pals like Scarlett Johansson and Sean Penn.

We created the Leaderboards because all of us on the Gamers Portal team are gamers too, and we know how competitive gamers are.? Achievements, ladders, and competitions are now tightly integrated into the gaming community, and we wanted to add an area of GP where everyone could see which teams have scrimmed the most through Gamers Portal.

Thus the Leaderboards were born, where you can see the top 25 scrimming clans from the last week, the last month, and all time.? We give you the ability to sort by platform, game, and time period.

We included recruitment status because we want to give clans a way to recruit new talent, and we want gamers everywhere to see which clans are experienced and looking to fill the rosters.
