Famed 'fiddler' pulls strings for music education ? Schools of ...

Atlanta (CNN) ? Mark O?Connor is comfortable with mixing it up.
The Grammy-winning violinist - or ?fiddler,? as he prefers - first gained fame as a teenage prodigy, learning at the elbows of Texas fiddler Benny Thomasson and French jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli. He?s played with rock groups, blues bands, symphony orchestras and bluegrass artists, jumping from genre to genre with assurance and joy.
Now he wants to add ?educator? to his list of activities. His ?O?Connor Method? of string playing builds on his interest in American music, deliberately veering away from the classical pieces emphasized in other programs.
?This kind of cross-cultural approach to music learning could have only happened here,? says O?Connor in an interview at CNN Center. ?We, by nature, are curious about being Americans. We generally are interested in what other cultures and other ethnicities offer our country. And music is the perfect vehicle to express these positive attributes.?
Music teachers couldn?t agree more.
?Students are coming to us in American classrooms from around the world, and it makes sense that musical styles are going to reflect the students whom we?re teaching,? says Kirk D. Moss, president of the American String Teachers Association.? He notes that the group celebrates a wide variety of music, even hosting an ?eclectic styles? festival as part of its yearly conference.
?I think we?re seeing a lot of different kinds of music and music groups,? he adds. ?That whole door is more open now than in the past.?
The gateway of music
It certainly wasn?t that way when O?Connor was growing up around Seattle in the 1960s and ?70s.
Though he showed a tremendous aptitude for violin, guitar and mandolin - even winning a national fiddling championship at age 13 - the music teacher at his high school, devoted to choral and band, didn?t support his work in a jazz trio in which O?Connor played guitar. And the school itself, O?Connor recalls on his website, wouldn?t approve of a tour he was offered with a local community college.
?Ever since then, I have had an utter distaste for the nonsensical rules of the entrenched, and a fiery desire to plead another approach,? he writes.
After leaving Seattle, O?Connor eventually joined the jazz-rock Dixie Dregs and then moved to Nashville, where he became a sought-after session man. For the past two decades he?s been all over the map, composing for orchestras, small groups and soloists in several styles of music.
But teaching violin remains close to his heart.
?I thought that strings could be in trouble for the first time in the history of strings,? he says when describing the origins of the O?Connor Method. ?The string environment has not embraced American music like the other musical departments, like wind and brass and percussion ? the strings are still hanging with Mozart and Vivaldi. It?s up to people like me to bridge some of these gaps in our art.?
Music educators appreciate the encouragement, as these are both the best of times and the worst of times for their profession.
On the plus side, programs still enjoy great support. Bands and choral groups are still a mainstay at schools, and at least 150 string programs were created between 1999 and 2009, according to Moss. The recent American String Teachers Association meeting in Atlanta set a record for attendance, Moss adds.
And far from simply teaching notes and rhythms, in the last two decades music teachers have emphasized the subject?s many disciplines, says Mark Kovacs, a music teacher at Tarkanian Middle School in Las Vegas, Nevada, who attended the association?s meeting. Music is an entry point to acoustics, language, history and math, he says.
?I teach physics. I teach European history and culture. I teach French,? he points out.
?We?re required to be cross-curricular and represent all ethnicities, all belief systems,? says Katharine Mason, a music teacher visiting from Boulder, Colorado.
But there?s also the economic challenges of the last decade: budget cuts, job losses - and the need to meet testing goals in key subjects, which prompts some districts to move money away from music. According to news reports, school districts in Kansas, Texas and California, among others, have eliminated or threatened to eliminate music education positions.
?There are fiscal strains in programs, especially music education in primary schools,? says Michael Butera, executive director of the National Association for Music Education.
Currently, 95 percent of elementary school students receive some music instruction, a figure that declines to about 50 percent at the middle school level and 22 percent for high school, according to the music education association. If cutbacks are made in the lower grades, Butera says, the pool of students in the upper grades will go down even more.
All of it keeps music teachers wary.
Creating enthusiasm
Butera observes that music education has benefits beyond simply learning music and related disciplines. The subject creates enthusiasm among students, teaches collaboration and showcases creativity.
?In America, we use music to celebrate our grandest moments, and we use it to help soothe our hurts at moments of tragedy,? he says. ?If we demonstrate we care, the students will care. We need to have policymakers understand the long-term value of not just in the school curriculum, but also for life.?
O?Connor agrees.
?It?s amazing how much music is central to our humanity,? he says. ?We?ll go to great lengths to have music in our lives.?
Teachers remain optimistic that schools ? and parents ? will continue to go to great lengths to keep music in the educational curriculum. Moss says that research indicates that administrators want students to have arts experiences, and Mark Kovacs? wife Ingrid, also a music teacher in Las?Vegas schools, says that the skills learned in music class will serve them in their careers.
?Children need to have a well-rounded education to be flexible in the skills they bring into the workforce, and that?s what employers are looking for,? she says. ?Even though our schools are maybe modeled after the 19th-century factory workplace, our workers now have to be much more able to take on new tasks quicker than 100 years ago or even 50 years ago.?
?We?re built to learn,? adds her husband.
O?Connor believes that it will take him up to seven years to complete the O?Connor Method books. (The first book came out in 2009; Book III was released last fall.) He?s been devoting more time to playing with students, including an appearance at the Atlanta conference and a concert in New Orleans with a student ensemble. He says it can?t help but make him more committed to the cause.
?I?m living out the experience,? he says.

Adam Levine might be single again in real life, but he's ready to play one half of a couple known as "the Lovers" on FX's creep-tastic hit drama "American Horror Story."
The Maroon 5 frontman and "The Voice" judge has confirmed the part to E! News. "It is the truth," Levine told Ryan Seacrest about the previously rumored role. "I mean, it's pretty much happening. I think it's happening. I don't know how much I can divulge, because [series co-creator] Ryan [Murphy] is very under wraps.
"It's going to be fun. And I told [Ryan] I really didn't know what I was doing, but he didn't seem to really care," Levine continued. "So I'm just going to go and try to [do] acting. I think I'm going to be kind of playing myself, so hopefully it will be easy."
Season two is set to premiere in October with returning season one favorites Jessica Lange, Zachary Quinto, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Lily Rabe. E! further reports that the new season might take place on the East Coast at a mental institution. Season one took place in Los Angeles with a troubled family moving into a new home, lovingly referred to as "Murder House" on the series because so many people were murdered in it.
About Murphy, Levine said, "He's really great. And I love the fact that he believes in me to throw me out there."
Given how often the guys appear shirtless on "American Horror Story" — and how famous Levine's abs are — fans should probably expect Murphy to make the most of that aspect of his persona. The identity of the other "Lover" is top secret for now.

90% In Darkness
Nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2012 Academy Awards, Agnieszka Holland's IN DARKNESS, is the poor man's SCHINDLER'S LIST, and I mean that as a high compliment. Now don't get me wrong. I think Spielberg made a masterpiece with his Shoah epic, but Holland earns astute emotions and mines similar themes yet in a more intimate setting. Based on the true story of a Polish sewer worker who charged a small group of Jewish refugees a daily fee to squat in the filthy sewers beneath the city. The title of the film is apt, as so much of it takes place in utter darkness. At almost two and a half hours in length, we feel every minute of their intensely long hiding. Like Schindler, our main character, Leopold Socha, played wonderfully by Robert Wieckiewicz, is an opportunist rather than a Jewish sympathizer. In fact, his anti-semitism is much more overt than Schindler's. On the other hand, his wife Wanda, an incredible Kinga Preis, is much more liberal at the outset, but wants to turn her back on the Jews when she fears for her life and that of her family. Their story is so searing, so vivid and unsentimental. It's no wonder I was more drawn to it than to the lives of the various Jews here. While all terrific actors who are given one horrifying scene after another to endure, their plight isn't as layered as that of Socha.There is one exception, and it's played by Benno Furmann, who is the love child of a Patrick Wilson/Josh Lucas bromance. Playing a man who leaves the sewers to escape INTO a concentration camp to save someone's life, he has leading man written all over her face. He easily commands the screen in all of his scenes. One of my all-time favorite critics, Roger Ebert, dismissed this film by saying that we've seen it all before. As much as I respect his opinion, I disagree. Usually films about this period in history tend to glorify the Jewish characters and they make every moment epic. IN DARKNESS does just the opposite. The Jews are just as flawed as any other characters here, as flawed as anybody would be when facing unreal, desperate circumstances. This is not a hyped up film. Something as simple as rainfall becomes an exciting action sequence, but it's played with an ingenious, dispassionate touch that Holland has always brought to her work.

Israel Shields Public from Risks of War with Iran
TEL AVIV, Mar 29, 2012 (IPS) - The government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been telling Israelis that Israel can attack Iran with minimal civilian Israeli casualties as a result of retaliation, and that reassuring message appears to have headed off any widespread Israeli fear of war with Iran and other adversaries.
But the message that Iran is too weak to threaten an effective counterattack is contradicted by one of Israel's leading experts on Iranian missiles and the head of its missile defence programme for nearly a decade, who says Iranian missiles are capable of doing significant damage to Israeli targets.
The Israeli population has shown little serious anxiety about the possibility of war with Iran, in large part because they have not been told that it involves a risk of Iranian missiles destroying Israeli neighbourhoods and key economic and administrative targets.
"People are not losing sleep over this," Yossi Alpher, a consultant and writer on strategic issues and former director of the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University, told IPS in an interview. "This is not a preoccupation of the public the way the suicide bombers were a decade ago."
Alpher says one reason for the widespread lack of urgency about a possible war with Iran is that the scenarios involving such a war are "so nebulous in the eyes of the public that it's difficult for them to focus on it".
Aluf Benn, the editor in chief of Haaretz, told IPS in an interview, "There is no war mentality," although he added, "that could change overnight." One reason for the relative public calm about the issue, he suggested, is the official view that Iran's ability to retaliate is "very limited".
Jeffrey Goldberg wrote in Bloomberg Mar. 20 that "Some Israel officials believe Iran's leaders might choose to play down the insult of a raid and launch a handful of rockets at Tel Aviv as an angry gesture rather than declare all-out war."
But Uzi Rubin, who was in charge of Israel's missile defence from 1991 to 1999 and presided over the development of the Arrow anti- missile system, has a much more sombre view of Iran's capabilities.
The "bad news" for Israel, Rubin told IPS in an interview, is that the primary factor affecting Iran's capability to retaliate is the rapidly declining cost of increased precision in ballistic missiles. Within a very short time, Iran has already improved the accuracy of its missiles from a few kilometres from the target to just a few metres, according to Rubin.
That improvement would give Iran the ability to hit key Israeli economic infrastructure and administrative targets, he said. "I'm asking my military friends how they feel about waging war without electricity," said Rubin.
The consequences of Iranian missile strikes on administrative targets could be even more serious, Rubin believes. "If the civilian government collapses," he said, "the military will find it difficult to wage a war."
Rubin is even worried that, if the accuracy of Iranian missiles improves further, which he believes is "bound to happen", Iran will be able to carry out pinpoint attacks on Israel's air bases, which are concentrated in just a few places.
Some Israeli analysts have suggested that Israel could hit Iranian missiles in a preemptive strike, but Rubin said Israel can no longer count on being able to hit Iranian missiles before they are launched.
Iran's longer-range missiles have always been displayed on mobile transporter erector launchers (TELs), as Rubin pointed out in an article in Arms Control Today earlier this year. "The message was clear," Rubin wrote. "Iran's missile force is fully mobile, hence, not pre-emptable."
Rubin, who has argued for more resources to be devoted to the Arrow anti-missile system, acknowledged that it can only limit the number of missiles that get through. In an e-mail to IPS, he cited the Arrow system's record of more than 80 percent success in various tests over the years, but also noted that such a record "does not assure an identical success rate in real combat".
The United States and Israel began in 2009 developing a new version of the Arrow missile defence system called "Reshef" - "Flash" - or "Arrow 3", aimed at intercepting Iranian missiles above the atmosphere and farther away from Israeli territory than the earlier version of the Arrow. The new anti-missile system can alter the trajectory of the defensive missile and distinguish decoys from real missile reentry vehicles.
Until last November, the Arrow 3 system was not expected to become operational until 2015. And that plan was regarded by U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) as probably too ambitious, because such a system would normally take a decade from conception to deployment.
But Xinhua news agency reported in November that Israeli Air Force officials said they expected Arrow 3 to become operational by mid- 2013, cutting even that abbreviated timeline for development of the system in half.
Nevertheless, the ability of the Arrow 3 system to shoot down an incoming missile still has not been announced, although an Israeli official said Mar. 1 that such a test would take place after the meeting between President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu.
In December 2008, Western intelligence sources were reported by Israel's Ynet News as saying the improved version of the Shahab 3 missile had gone into production earlier that year and that Iran was believed to be able to produce 75 of the improved missiles annually.
Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, then IDF chief of staff, told a visiting Congressional delegation in November 2009 that Iran already had 300 missiles capable of hitting Israeli targets, according to a U.S. State Department cable released by WikiLeaks.
Those reports suggest that Iran now has roughly 450 missiles that can reach Israel, half of which are improved models with much greater precision. Even if only one-fifth of those missiles get through Israel's missile defences, Israeli cities could be hit by at least 100, most of which are able to hit targets with relative accuracy.
The Netanyahu government has sought to minimise the threat of Iranian retaliation for an Israeli strike against Iran in part by likening war with Iran to those fought against Hezbollah and Palestinian rockets in recent years, which have resulted in relatively few Israeli civilian casualties.
That was the message that Israeli military officials conveyed to the Israeli news media after an escalation of violence between the IDF and Palestinian armed groups in Gaza earlier this month.
Columnist Zvi Barel of Haaretz speculated on Mar. 11 that the purpose of the escalation, provoked by the IDF assassination of Zuhair al- Qaisi, the secretary general of the Popular Resistance Committee in Gaza, was to show the Israeli public that Israeli missile defence system could protect the population against rockets that the IDF linked to Iran.
Barel went even further. "After Iron Dome demonstrated its 95 percent effectiveness," he wrote, "there is no better proof to Israel's citizens that they will not suffer serious damage following an assault on Iran."
The success of the Iron Dome against short-range rockets from Gaza is irrelevant, however, to what could be expected from a relatively untested Arrow system against Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at Israeli targets.

The Southwest Florida Water Management District is gathering input to improve the identification of flooding risks in the Braden River watershed in Manatee County. The District is serving as a cooperating technical partner for the Federal Emergency Management Agency on its national effort to update and modernize the FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps.
