Humongous extinct bird egg up for auction. Where did it come from?

The fine arts auction house Christie's is auctioning off a huge, partly fossilized egg laid by an elephant bird, an extinct creature native to Madagascar. The starting price: $45,000.

James Hyslop, the Christie's scientific specialist shown in the Magritte-esque photo above, told the BBC that the type of egg is "the largest egg ever laid by any animal."

The egg is "bigger than dinosaur eggs," said Hyslop.

Of course, phylogenetically speaking, birds?are?dinosaurs, a fact that is easier to believe when you consider the creature that dropped this particular ovum, the elephant bird.

The elephant bird, if you haven't guessed by its name and the size of the egg, was big. Bigger, in fact, than the biggest living bird, the African ostrich. Like the African ostrich, the elephant bird was flightless and from Africa ? Madagascar to be exact. But unlike the African ostrich, it stood over 10 feet tall and weighed up to 800 lbs.?In short, it's not the sort of creature you'd like to meet in a dark alley, unless you happen to be a paleoornithologist?with a tranquilizer rifle.

Elephant birds, a term that comprises up to four species, were common on Madagascar through the 17th century. They are thought to have been driven out of existence by humans, either directly through hunting or indirectly through diseases carried by poultry brought to the island.

How did the elephant bird get so big? It's an example of island gigantism, a phenomenon by which animals on islands tend to evolve to be much larger than their mainland counterparts. Island gigantism often occurs when islands make poor habitats for large predatory mammals, either because they offer limited ranges or because the mammals can't cross the water to get there in the first place. In the absence of such predators, other animals can evolve to fill their niches. Either that, or the lack of predators allow them to grow larger, because there is no need to hide or escape. But?when humans arrive on an island, its giants tend to go extinct. ?

Examples of island gigantism can be found with Komodo dragons, Galapagos tortoises, and the Flores giant rat. ?

In 1894, the science fiction author H.G. Wells published a short story about a man who discovers an ancient elephant bird egg, which subsequently hatches.

There have been many novice PC users who have seen major success with Internet businesses; you may be the next Internet superstar. This article contains useful advice for anyone that wants to create an Internet business.

If you want to run a good business on the internet, then you should find out what your competition is doing. Browse sites selling products similar to your own, and make note of what they are doing right and wrong. When you notice lacking services on other websites, you should make sure these services are emphasized on your site in order to stand out from the crowd.

Give your customers the appearance that they are in complete control of the content being delivered. This is important today in a marketing world full of spam and unwanted opinions. Broadcast that it is optional for them to participate, and that will increase your visibility and credibility.

Try to use banners on your website that are not obvious in looking like a banner. Use banners that are links to click on to get to more content. Many people find banners a real turn-off, so this practice may entice them to click where they otherwise would not have.

NOTE! When it comes to Internet marketing, it is important to watch what your competition is doing. It does not matter what your niche is, you will have competition at all times.

There is tough competition on the Internet from big companies. There are two things that you can do to address this issue: compare your prices against your competitors? prices, and adjust your prices based on the comparisons. In addition, you should showcase your products in an online store of your own inside this marketplace where your customers can conveniently view your products.

Internet marketing is both alike and different than other kinds of marketing. For example, you may find that search engines are no longer paying attention to your title tags. If things get changed up, you should be willing to change your approach as well, like putting an effort into marketing via videos.

One critical factor is gaining and maintaining your customers? trust. As you develop your marketing plan, you should only consider facts and statistics that are easily proven and valid. Use testimonials, expert endorsements, and results on your site to promote your products.

Pay attention to what the other companies are doing, and try to think of new ideas based of what you learn. If they are succeeding, you need to analyze what they are doing.

NOTE! Attaching your keyword to internal links is very useful. Your page index relies on individuals spending time reading your content.

Of course, mastering any respective field or niche is going to take a lot of time and practice, but you have to get started somewhere. Utilize the info in this post to jump start your process and reach your end goal sooner.

OK, we?re pretty much finished for now?

I?ll go ahead and deliver some more online marketing methods for you 24 hours from now. Do feel free to, write your thoughts below and I?ll see what can be done to help you out.

Thank you for spending your precious time with me today and talk with you the next time.

'Skim Milk Marriage' is the New 'Broccoli'

During today's oral arguments before the Supreme Court, concerning the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg remarked ? to the delight of Twitter ? that the lack of federal benefits for same-sex couples in states that gay marriage had created a tiered system for straights and gays, which she compared to the grades of milk one can purchase at a grocery store:

JUSTICE GINSBURG: They're not -- they're not a question of additional benefits. I mean, they touch every aspect of life. Your partner is sick. Social Security. I mean, it's pervasive. It's not as though, well, there's this little Federal sphere and it's only a tax question. It's -- it's -- as Justice Kennedy said, 1100 statutes, and it affects every area of life. And so he was really diminishing what the State has said is marriage. You're saying, no, State said two kinds of marriage; the full marriage, and then this sort of skim milk marriage. (Laughter.)

This isn't the first time Ginsburg has latched onto a food metaphor during proceedings for a high-profile Supreme Court decision. Last June, in the Supreme Court's ruling on the Affordable Care Act, Ginsburg flayed her Supreme Court Colleague for suggesting that the individual mandate, the Act's key?mechanism, would establish a precedent under which the U.S. government could force Americans to consume broccoli. Witness her response (bolding ours):

As an example of the type of regulation he fears, THE CHIEF JUSTICE cites a Government mandate to purchase green vegetables. Ante, at 22?23. One could call this concern ?the broccoli horrible.? Congress, THE CHIEF JUSTICE posits, might adopt such a mandate, reasoning that an individual?s failure to eat a healthy diet, like the failure to purchase health insurance, imposes costs on others. See ibid.

Consider the chain of inferences the Court would have to accept to conclude that a vegetable-purchase mandate was likely to have a substantial effect on the health-care costs borne by lithe Americans. The Court would have to believe that individuals forced to buy vegetables would then eat them (instead of throwing or giving them away), would prepare the vegetables in a healthy way (steamed or raw, not deep-fried), would cut back on unhealthy foods, and would not allow other factors (such as lack of exercise or little sleep) to trump the improved diet.9 Such ?pil[ing of] inference upon inference? is just what the Court re? fused to do in Lopez and Morrison.?

As we all know, the Supreme Court held up the Affordable Care Act ? and thus the individual mandate ? as constitutional, ending the long, Republican-led fight to overturn President Obama's biggest legislative accomplishment, at least using the courts. Still, conservative groups in Washington have put up less of a fight over the Defense of Marriage Act, and nobody really considers Obama's evolution on gay marriage a significant feat, so the presence of?this?food metaphor is probably less a portent of the Court's June ruling and, like so many things on Twitter, more of a silly coincidence.

Comedian Anderson still hurting from diving mishap

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) ? Comedian Louie Anderson says he's been in pain all week from a recent diving mishap during a taping of the ABC celebrity diving show "Splash."

Anderson, who weighs more than 400 pounds, was trying to do a flip from the 5-meter board when he slammed into the water, landing on his face and chest.

"If I were lying down right now, you would have to help me up," the 60-year-old Anderson said Wednesday. "It's been almost a week and it still hurts almost as much."

Anderson, who skipped diving practice Tuesday night to take the stage in Sioux Falls, S.D., for a show benefiting the Brennan Rock & Roll Academy, said he asked the "Splash" staff after the accident if he was suffering internal bleeding or damage but was told no.

"They said, 'That's your abs. You've never worked them,'" Anderson joked. "The last time I worked them was when I was struggling to get out of my mother. That was it, and I haven't worked them since."

The American version of "Splash," a surprise hit that originated in Europe, has Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis coaching a diverse cast of celebrities that includes Detroit Lions lineman Ndamukong Suh, 2012 Miss Alabama Katherine Webb, basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and former Baywatch star Nicole Eggert.

Anderson said he's not alone coming away with some bumps and bruises.

"Ndamukong Suh hit his nose. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar sprained his neck," he said. "Nicole was up on a handstand and she slammed her chest and stomach into the 5-meter board and then fell into the water ? and then, two hours later, had to do the dive on TV."

Anderson, who just learned how to swim five years ago, said he decided to give the show a try after producers showed him a clip of the Netherlands version. He said it's the most exciting thing he's ever done.

"I'm at 23 feet, diving into 17 feet of water. I'm over 400 pounds," he said. "Who doesn't want to see that? I do. I'm always shocked that I can do it."

The stand-up comedian said he's glad the show is catching on with viewers.

"I didn't have any idea if it would be a hit or not," he said. "I was either going to be inspirational or a laughingstock. So I'm lucky that some people thought I did a good job."

Anderson said he's having a lot of fun, but he's also trying to win.

"I know people don't think I have a chance, but that's how I think," he said. "Why do it if you don't do it great?"

Landscaping Tips for the First-Time Homebuyer - RealEstate.com

Buying your first home is both frightening and exciting, and that?s understandable. It should be. Your home is most likely the biggest purchase you will ever make. Whether or not you?re a first-time homebuyer, chances are there was something about the house or property that made you feel like this was a place to call ?home.?

Buying a property with healthy trees is just one landscaping tip for first-time homebuyersFor many people, moving into a house, as opposed to a condominium, means the opportunity to have enough space for letting the dog run around, playing catch with your children, or hosting big barbeque parties. In other words, it means having a backyard, and having a backyard brings a whole new set of responsibilities.

If you?re like most potential homebuyers, you?re concentrating on the house, not the landscape, when viewing a home for sale. As you shop for your new home, the following landscaping tips will hopefully help you avoid expensive problems in the future.

Homebuying Landscape Tip #1: Where?s the High Water Mark?

If you can avoid living in a floodplain, do it. A few years ago, a friend of mine purchased a home in a 100-year floodplain. By definition, a 100-year flood only has a 1 percent chance of occurring each year. Unfortunately, soon after she purchased the property, a real estate development with a large building footprint and lots of surface parking went up near her property. The excess run-off caused by the new development created an increase in the flood frequency, and every year thereafter her property flooded in the winter.

She wanted to have a garden and do some landscaping, so she had me come out and assess the situation. Unfortunately, she couldn?t have the ornamental garden plants like roses and lavender that she wanted. Her best strategy was to plant shrubs and trees that could handle being inundated by water for a period of time each year ? plants like red-twig dogwood, Western red cedar, and snowberry. In order to have any kind of garden, she would basically have to plant trees and shrubs that were native to wetlands. Needless to say, this was not the garden she wanted.

If the home you?re buying is in a floodplain, think long and hard about what it would be like to have your property underwater, literally, before signing those papers.

While we?re on the subject of water ?

Homebuying Landscape Tip #2: Where Does the Water Go?

When buying a home, take time to walk around the property. Check for areas where the soil is muddy or there?s standing water. Sometimes this can merely be an indication of poor-draining soils, but sometimes standing water can be caused by much larger issues like a leak in a water, sewer, or irrigation line.

Also check for any water that drains toward the house. Civil engineers and landscape architects typically design soil grading to slope away from buildings at a rate of at least 2 percent for a minimum of 5 feet. This prevents most water from draining toward the foundation or basement of the house. If you?re considering buying a home where the land around it slopes toward the house, take special care to have these areas inspected. Most houses are built with below-grade drainage to divert water away from the foundation, but don?t assume anything. It?s better to be safe than sorry.

Homebuying Landscape Tip #3: Humpty Dumpty Sat on a Wall

If the property you?re buying contains any site retaining walls, check their condition. Be on the lookout for large cracks or areas where the wall may be failing. Concrete retaining walls can be built to be straight up and down or with a slight batter, meaning that the wall slants slightly back into the soil it?s retaining. If they seem structurally sound, it?s fine. On stone retaining walls, watch for any areas where stones seem to be missing or coming away from the rest of the wall. Finally, be especially cautious of any wall where the top of the wall has started to bow out over the bottom. This is usually an indication of poor drainage behind the wall, failure in the reinforcement or structure of the wall, or damage from large tree roots, and a clear sign that the wall is failing.

Homebuying Landscape Tip #4: Don?t Buy Butchered Trees

Nothing bothers me more than seeing trees that have been topped. This often happens when a homeowner decides he?s going to open up the views from his property. Armed with a chainsaw and spare time on a weekend, the homeowner will go out and saw the tops off of all of the trees on the property. If the property you are considering has topped trees, move along or have the seller compensate you for the damage he?s done by negotiating the purchase price. On average, it will cost around $1,500 to remove each tree.

?But what?s the problem with topped trees,? you ask. ?I want to see the view of the ocean (the mountains, the lake, insert spectacular view here).? The problem is that trees do not have any way to heal their wounds. That?s not just some tree-hugger nonsense ? that?s the truth, and it has implications for the tree?s health and the safety of your home. So, if you are going to top a tree, top it at ground level. That?s right: Cut it down and take it out.

Trees don?t heal; they seal.?

The best a tree can ever do after you make a cut is try to seal over the wound with future bark growth. Topping a tree opens it up to all manner of plant diseases. Trees that have been topped are more susceptible to root rot, which compromises the root structure and stability of the tree.

Furthermore, topping a tree doesn?t keep it from growing. In fact, pruning encourages growth. The branching structure that results after topping is often much weaker than the original growth, especially on conifers. The moral of the story is this: If there is going to be a tree that blows over onto your house in a windstorm, with its potential for root rot and poor branching structure, I?d put money on the tree that was topped. (I realize that to readers from the Midwest this may seem extreme, but in the Pacific Northwest, big trees and windstorms are a huge issue.)

I?ve given you the big landscape issues to watch for here. With these tips you?ll know the big landscape problems to avoid when buying a home. Water and the structural integrity of built landscape elements and trees are the biggest issues to keep in mind. Beyond that, there are not many landscape problems that can?t be fixed without a little time, effort ? and the possible outlay of cash.

Natural Solutions for Eczema: Why It's Important ?

?

We all know how frustrating it can be when one suffers from an itchy?rash or skin condition. But for those?who suffer from eczema it can not only be devastating? but also difficult to narrow down what treatments to use.?One reason?for this is?because there are so many forms of eczema, since eczema is the term for many types of skin inflammations, also known as dermatitis.?Eczema?can happen at any age and?it can be difficult to find a solution that will work as every person is unique,? and causes of eczema vary, but include allergens, environmental irritants, soaps, perfumes, or chemicals; food allergies; lifestyle, stress, ?or even changes in temperature or humidity.

Since eczema is a skin condition that may be caused by allergens?why not keep an open mind and use a more?natural solution. When it comes to treatments for eczema, many of these treatments, especially?those prescribed by a doctor, can be unhealthy. Prescribed treatments for eczema?can include?oral or topical corticosteroids or antihistamines, others used are immune-suppressing drugs known as calcineurin inhibitors. If you or someone you know, are?searching for a natural solution to eczema, you might want to suggest a more natural solution such as?Evening Primrose Oil.

Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) is derived from the seeds of the evening primrose plant. The evening primrose is a North American native biennial plant. that is often?four to five?feet or more in height. Native Americans used the evening primrose plant for food as well as?for healing bruises.? Although the entire plant is edible, the oil contained in its seeds is where the Evening Primrose oil is derived from. The seeds contain the essential gamma-linoleinc?acid (GLA), which is a fatty acid that the body turns into a substance called prostaglandin.?This?is a fatty?acid the?body does not manufacture,?and which research has shown to be beneficial in the treatment of eczema.

Compensation was received for this post. All opinions?expressed above are solely my own and do not reflect?in any way any one elses opinions.

Scientists examine nothing, find something

Two studies of vacuums suggest that the speed of light in a vacuum might fluctuate, pointing the way to a quantum mechanical explanation for why the speed of light and other so-called constants are what they are.

By Eoin O'Carroll,?Staff / March 25, 2013

A young person attempts to navigate a laser maze during the grand opening ceremony for the Angry Birds Space Encounter at the Kennedy Space Center earlier this month. Researchers say that the speed of light in a vacuum, long thought to be a universal constant, may actually fluctuate.

Malcolm Denemark/Florida Today/AP

Where did the speed of light in a vacuum come from? Why is it 299,792,458 meters per second and not some other figure?

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The simple answer is that, since 1983, science has defined a meter by the speed of light: one meter equals the distance light travels in one?299,792,458th of a second.?But that doesn't really answer our question. It's just the physics equivalent of saying, "Because I said so."?

Unfortunately, the deeper answer has been equally unsatisfying: The speed of light in a vacuum, according to physics textbooks, just is. It's a constant, one of those numbers that defines the universe. That's the physics equivalent of saying, "Because the cosmos said so."?

Or did it? A pair of studies suggest that this universal constant?might not be so constant after all. In the first study, Marcel Urban from the University of Paris-Sud and his team found that the speed of light in a vacuum varies ever so slightly.

This happens because what we think of as nothing isn't really nothing. Even if you were to create a perfect vacuum, at the quantum level it would still be populated with pairs of tiny "virtual" particles that flash in and out of existence and whose energy values fluctuate. As a consequence of these fluctuations, the speed of a photon passing through a vacuum varies, about?50 quintillionths of a second per square meter.

That may not sound like much, but it's enough to point the way toward a new underlying physics.

Before 1905, when?Albert Einstein formulated his special theory of relativity, scientists regarded space and time as composing the backdrop of the universe, the immovable stage upon which motion takes place. The only problem with this model is that light seems to move at the same speed regardless of the speed of the its source, creating an apparent paradox. Einstein's theory resolved this paradox by replacing Newton's absolutes of time and space with a single absolute, the speed of light.

But if even that can vary, what's left for us to hang our hat on? Nothing, it turns out.

But, as we just noted, nothing is something. Urban's paper suggests that the speed of light and other constants "are not fundamental constants but observable parameters of the quantum vacuum." In other words, the speed of light emerges from the properties of particles in the vacuum.

In the other paper, physicists?Gerd Leuchs and Luis L. S?nchez-Soto, from the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Light in Erlangen, Germany, hypothesize how this emergence occurs. They suggest that the impedance of a vacuum ? another electromagnetic 'constant' whose value depends on the speed of light ? itself depends only on the electric charge of the particles in the vacuum, and not their masses.

If their hypothesis is correct, it answers our question of where the speed of light comes from: it emerges from the total number of charged particles in the universe.?

Time will tell if this hypothesis is correct. And of course, by "time," we mean "space and time," by which we mean "the speed of light," by which we mean "nothing," by which we mean "the properties of the quantum vacuum." But in the meantime ? or whatever ? you can thank us for informing you that, as the speed of light in a vacuum continues to fluctuate, so too does the length of the meter. Think nothing of it.?

Uncovering Africa's oldest known penguins

Mar. 26, 2013 ? Africa isn't the kind of place you might expect to find penguins. But one species lives along Africa's southern coast today, and newly found fossils confirm that as many as four penguin species coexisted on the continent in the past. Exactly why African penguin diversity plummeted to the one species that lives there today is still a mystery, but changing sea levels may be to blame, the researchers say.

The fossil findings, described in the March 26 issue of the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, represent the oldest evidence of these iconic tuxedo-clad seabirds in Africa, predating previously described fossils by 5 to 7 million years.

Co-authors Daniel Thomas of the National Museum of Natural History and Dan Ksepka of the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center happened upon the 10-12 million year old specimens in late 2010, while sifting through rock and sediment excavated from an industrial steel plant near Cape Town, South Africa.

Jumbled together with shark teeth and other fossils were 17 bone fragments that the researchers recognized as pieces of backbones, breastbones, wings and legs from several extinct species of penguins.

Based on their bones, these species spanned nearly the full size spectrum for penguins living today, ranging from a runty pint-sized penguin that stood just about a foot tall (0.3 m), to a towering species closer to three feet (0.9 m).

Only one penguin species lives in Africa today -- the black-footed penguin, or Spheniscus demersus, also known as the jackass penguin for its loud donkey-like braying call. Exactly when penguin diversity in Africa started to plummet, and why, is still unclear.

Gaps in the fossil record make it difficult to determine whether the extinctions were sudden or gradual. "[Because we have fossils from only two time periods,] it's like seeing two frames of a movie," said co-author Daniel Ksepka. "We have a frame at five million years ago, and a frame at 10-12 million years ago, but there's missing footage in between."

Humans probably aren't to blame, the researchers say, because by the time early modern humans arrived in South Africa, all but one of the continent's penguins had already died out.

A more likely possibility is that rising and falling sea levels did them in by wiping out safe nesting sites.

Although penguins spend most of their lives swimming in the ocean, they rely on offshore islands near the coast to build their nests and raise their young. Land surface reconstructions suggest that five million years ago -- when at least four penguin species still called Africa home -- sea level on the South African coast was as much as 90 meters higher than it is today, swamping low-lying areas and turning the region into a network of islands. More islands meant more beaches where penguins could breed while staying safe from mainland predators.

But sea levels in the region are lower today. Once-isolated islands have been reconnected to the continent by newly exposed land bridges, which may have wiped out beach nesting sites and provided access to predators.

Although humans didn't do previous penguins in Africa in, we'll play a key role in shaping the fate of the one species that remains, the researchers add.

Numbers of black-footed penguins have declined by 80% in the last 50 years, and in 2010 the species was classified as endangered. The drop is largely due to oil spills and overfishing of sardines and anchovies -- the black-footed penguin's favorite food.

"There's only one species left today, and it's up to us to keep it safe," Thomas said.

Women's under-representation likely to persist for generations

Washington, D.C. (March 26, 2013) Despite some very high-profile female candidates and elected officials, and what looks like a changing landscape of U.S. politics, a new study conducted by American University professor and director of its Women and Politics Institute Jennifer L. Lawless and Richard L. Fox (Loyola Marymount University) reveals that young women are less likely than young men ever to have considered running for office, to express interest in a candidacy at some point in the future, or to consider elective office a desirable profession.

In their new report, Girls Just Wanna Not Run: The Gender Gap in Young Americans' Political Ambition, Lawless and Fox detail the results of a survey of a national sample of more than 2,100 college students. The authors find a dramatic gap between women and men's interest in running for office; men were twice as likely as women to have thought about running for office "many times," whereas women were 20 percentage points more likely than men never to have considered it (see Figure 1). Importantly, the 20 point gap is just as large as the one we previously uncovered among adult professionals (in their 40s and 50s) who were well-situated to pursue a candidacy.

The report identifies five factors that contribute to the gender gap in political ambition among college students:

  1. Young men are more likely than young women to be socialized by their parents to think about politics as a career path.
  2. From their school experiences to their peer associations to their media habits, young women tend to be exposed to less political information and discussion than do young men.
  3. Young men are more likely than young women to have played organized sports and care about winning.
  4. Young women are less likely than young men to receive encouragement to run for office from anyone.
  5. Young women are less likely than young men to think they will be qualified to run for office, even in the not-so-near future.

Given this persistent gender gap in political ambition, we are a long way from a political reality in which young women and men are equally likely to aspire to seek and hold elective office in the future. Certainly, recruitment efforts by women's organizations nationally and on college campuses can chip away at the gender imbalance in interest in running for office. Encouraging parents, family members, teachers, and coaches to urge young women to think about a political career can mitigate the gender gap in ambition, too. And spurring young women to immerse themselves in competitive environments, such as organized sports, can go a long way in reinforcing the competitive spirit associated with interest in a future candidacy. But women's under-representation in elective office is likely to extend well into the future. In the end, this report documents how far from gender parity we remain and the deeply embedded nature of the obstacles we must still overcome to achieve it.

My Top 5 NZ Series for Kids and Teens | My Best Friends Are Books

March 26, 2013 ? 8:00 am

Like many kids I?m a fan of series.? There?s nothing better than sinking your teeth into a great series and being able to read more than one book featuring your favourite characters.? While there aren?t a heap of New Zealand series for kids and teens there are some that really stand out for me.? Some of them make me laugh again and again, while others take me to different times and places.? Here are my Top 5 NZ series for kids and teens.

  • The Karazan Quartet by V.M. Jones

I was excited when the first book in the series, The Serpents of Arakesh, came out.? The idea of an orphan boy getting the chance to test a new computer game and go into this game to retrieve a magical object sounded fantastic, and I wasn?t disappointed.? As soon as I started I knew I was going to love this book, and the other three books in the series just got better and better.? It?s one of my favourite fantasy series and just writing about it now makes me want to go back and read it all over again.? After publishing this series and a couple of great contemporary (and award-winning) novels, V.M. Jones seems to have disappeared.? I really miss her writing and I wonder what she?s doing now.

If you have this series in your library, get it out on display and promote it to your Year 5+ kids, especially the boys.

  • The Juno series by Fleur Beale
    • Book 2 ? Fierce September
    • Book 3 ? Heart of Danger

Once I got in to Juno of Taris I couldn?t put it down.? Fleur Beale?s strength with this series is her characters, the strong bonds between them and also the conflict between them.? Fleur really makes you feel for her characters and the strange situation that they are in.? After reading the first book, I would have been satisfied to leave the characters as they were, then Fleur wrote two sequels.? I really enjoyed following these characters as they settled into their new life, and it was great to find out more about the other characters in the series.

Recommended for 11+

  • Dinosaur Rescue series by Kyle Mewburn and Donovan Bixley
    • Currently 8 books in the series, starting with T-wreck-asaurus

Prehistoric toilet humour ? what more can you ask for!? These books are full of dinosaur farts, dinosaur poo, caveman vomit and partial caveman nudity.? Not only are they disgusting and hilarious, you also learn heaps about dinosaurs and prehistoric life.? The challenge is trying to figure out what is factually accurate or just a huge whopper.? Kyle and Donovan are too of the wackiest people to ever be thrown together to create a series and it?s a truly winning combination.? If your children haven?t discovered this series yet they are seriously missing out.

  • My New Zealand Story series by various authors

The My New Zealand Story series from Scholastic New Zealand introduces children to different events and periods of New Zealand?s history.? I love this series because it gives a snapshot of the life of a fictional character (based on real people) and how they cope with life in the goldfields, or in colonial New Zealand, or how they react to a disaster like the Napier Earthquake.? These books also highlight how different the lives of the characters is to the lives of children today.? They really bring history alive for young readers and connect them with the history of their country.? The latest in the series is Cyclone Bola by Kath Beattie and my school librarian friend, Desna, has a book in the series coming out next year.

Recommended for 9+

  • Tales of Fontania series by Barbara Else
    • The Traveling Restaurant
    • The Queen and the Nobody Boy

Barbara Else?s Tales of Fontania series is a fantasy series that stands out from the crowd.? Barbara has an incredible imagination and her world and characters jump off the page.? Her tales are full of adventure, danger, royalty, spies, flying trains, a floating restaurant, stinky trolls, poisonous toads and much, much more.? You never know what who or what you?re going to meet next.? Thanks to the stunning covers by Sam Broad the books jump off the shelf and grab your attention.? I have it on good authority that there are more Tales of Fontania to come too.

Coca-Cola cutting 750 U.S. jobs

(Reuters) - Coca-Cola Co said on Thursday it will lay off 750 people in the United States as the world's largest soft drinks maker streamlines its business three years after a big acquisition.

The job cuts, which will be across the board, represent about 1 percent of the company's workforce of 75,000 in North America. About one-fourth of the cuts will be in Coke's home city of Atlanta, said a spokesman, confirming an earlier media report.

In a memo sent to employees last month, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, Coke said that since the integration of its North American bottling system in 2010, it has identified areas that must be improved.

"We must become a more aligned and unified North American group," the memo said. "That means improving our structures, processes and systems."

Shares of Coca-Cola, which operates in nearly all the countries of the world, were up 3 cents at $39.90 in morning trade.

Judge sets rules for suit over Jackson doctor

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A Los Angeles judge set the stage Thursday for trial of a civil suit by Michael Jackson's mother against concert giant AEG Live.

Katherine Jackson claims the company negligently hired the doctor later convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the singer's death and failed to oversee him. She and the singer's two eldest children are expected to testify about the singer's last days.

Legal rulings by Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos anticipated a three-month trial that will revisit events preceding the singer's death from an anesthetic overdose in 2009.

Dr. Conrad Murray, who was convicted of manslaughter for administering the drug propofol, is not named in the lawsuit. But the judge agreed to allow him to be brought to court from jail to testify outside the jury's presence. He has said he would invoke his Fifth Amendment right not to testify. But lawyers said he could possibly talk about non-criminal issues.

The judge said jury selection would begin April 2 and attorneys estimated the search for a panel could be long and difficult because of the notoriety of the parties and the estimated length of the trial.

The judge granted several plaintiff's motions and rejected a few.

She refused to bar AEG from raising the subject of child molestation charges against Jackson from years ago. Lawyers for his mother claim it's irrelevant because he was acquitted.

Katherine Jackson's attorney, Kevin Boyle, argued that "There is nothing more prejudicial than dropping that bomb in court, mentioning child molestation."

But Palazuelos said she would allow testimony that Jackson became despondent and reliant on drugs because of the charges.

She refused to approve inquiry into the finances of Jackson's siblings and barred any testimony about a claim that Katherine Jackson was kidnapped by family members and taken to Arizona last year.

She wouldn't permit AEG lawyers to ask questions about possible discord in the marriage of Katherine and Joe Jackson and she barred any inquiry into the identity of the biological parents of Jackson's three children.

Katherine Jackson's suit seeks hundreds of millions of dollars from AEG including $200 million in non-economic damages, including emotional distress.

The case centers on whether AEG did an appropriate investigation of Murray and whether they controlled him while he was preparing Jackson for a series of concerts in London.

During arguments, the question arose of why Katherine Jackson did not sue Murray. Attorneys disclosed that Jackson's son Prince and his daughter, Paris, testified in depositions that they believed Murray was "a good person" and didn't want him sued. But Katherine Jackson, who had the decision, testified it was financial, they said.

The judge said AEG could have sued Murray as well.

"The same questions can be asked of you," she told AEG lawyers. "Why didn't you sue him?"

"Because we're not required to," attorney Marvin Putnam said.

The judge called the issue "a side show."

"He has no money and that's why they're not suing him," Putnam said.

Lifetime TV movie showing up to court

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Lifetime television network's attempt to air a movie this weekend on a man who killed his father and maimed his mother with an ax depends on a ruling from a New York state court.

A New York judge has temporarily banned Lifetime from showing "Romeo Killer: The Christopher Porco Story." It was scheduled to debut Saturday night and repeat on Sunday, showing the story about an upstate New York man imprisoned for the grisly crime.

Porco sought to stop the movie, arguing Lifetime needed permission to use his name because the movie represents a fictionalized account of the crime. New York state Supreme Court Judge Robert Muller agreed with him and temporarily barred the showing, pending a late April hearing.

Lifetime has asked the state Appellate Division to lift the injunction and allow the movie, which stars Eric McCormack of "Will & Grace" as an investigator, to be shown this weekend.

"It's a sad day when a convicted murderer who has exhausted all of his appeals can convince any court to stop people from exercising their First Amendment right to talk about his crime," Lifetime spokesman Les Eisner said Wednesday.

The extent to which Lifetime took liberties with the story is in question. Eisner said the movie was "inspired by" Porco's crime, but would give no further details. Court papers filed by Lifetime with the Appellate Division argue that the "details of the crimes, the criminal investigation, and the conviction of Porco as presented in the movie are all factually correct and well-documented."

Lifetime said it had spent more than $2 million acquiring rights to tell the Porco story and nearly $1 million promoting Saturday's premiere of the movie.

If viewers tune in expecting to see the movie Saturday and it is not on, they will "come to see Lifetime as unreliable and not trustworthy, which will have long-term negative effects on Lifetime's 'brand' and reputation, and may ultimately lead to declines in its ratings," the network argued in court papers.

Eisner would not comment on what Lifetime would air if the network is not permitted to show the movie this weekend.

Pope reaches out to Jews, Muslims, urges respect

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Francis has promised to continue the Catholic Church's "fraternal" dialogue with Jews and work with Muslims for the common good.

Francis met Wednesday with religious representatives from a dozen faiths and traditions who attended his installation Mass a day earlier.

The bulk of his comments were directed at Christian groups, particularly the Orthodox who were represented among others by Bartholomew I, the first ecumenical patriarch to attend the installation since the Catholic and Orthodox church split nearly 1,000 years ago.

Directing himself to the half-dozen rabbis attending, Francis promised to continue the "useful brotherly dialogue" that has been under way since the Second Vatican Council. He singled out Muslims in his comments, saying he wanted to "grow in esteemed respect" and work for the common good.

Al-Qaida in Iraq claims deadly attacks

BAGHDAD (AP) ? An al-Qaida affiliated group in Iraq has claimed responsibility for bloody attacks that killed dozens of people across the country a day earlier.

In a statement posted Wednesday on a militant website, the Islamic State of Iraq, al-Qaida's Iraqi branch, said the Tuesday attacks were in revenge for the executions and "massacres" of convicted Sunni inmates held in Iraqi prisons

The al-Qaida statement warned the Shiite-led government to stop executing Sunni prisoners or "expect more bad events ... and seas of blood."

Insurgents set off a string of car bombs and other explosions in different parts of the country ahead of the 10th anniversary of the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, killing 65.
